In a modern metropolis that’s also an ancient city, every nook and crevice is teeming with history and surprises. This three-hour exploration of the back streets strikes deep into the heart of Tokyo. Using battery-powered bikes with an electrical assist, it’s a physically easy tour that delves into the history, ethnic culture, trivia and just plain fun of Tokyo like you’ve never seen it before. Visit the grave of Hachiko, Japan’s most famous dog. See where Japan’s first airplane took off. And stand in the precise geographic center of Tokyo. These are just some of the many things to see on this tour.

Veer away from the major tourist routes and discover the surprising appeal that awaits in the little-known crevices of Japan’s capital. This cycling tour takes a relaxed pace with a focus on discovering the little things that make travel worthwhile. At Hatanomori Hachiman Shrine in Tokyo, we will be addressed by a Shinto Priest. And if you haven’t climbed Mt. Fuji yet, you’ll have a chance to scale a miniature version. We’ll experience the rich ethnic culture of the Edo period before Japan opened its doors to the world. We later move on to the observation deck of Tokyo’s main government building in Shinjuku, with its breathtaking 360-degree sky-high vista of Tokyo, and cycle Yoyogi Park, the tranquil oasis at the center of it all. This tour can be enjoyed in groups as small as two visitors.

2. Meiji-Jingu Gaien Park

Built with donated money and volunteer work, the Outer Gardens of Meiji Shrine mark the achievements of Emperor Meiji, who opened Japan to the world. A series of pictures shows Japan’s history at a glance.

3. Hatanomori Hachiman Shrine

At Sendagaya’s Hatanomori Hachiman Shrine, we will experience important cultural and historic sites including a miniature version of Mt. Fuji, and Inari Shrine, which includes a stage for noh theater performances and other seldom-seen glimpses into living Japanese ethnic culture. When not engaged in the sacred rites and observances of the shrine, a Shinto priest often provides our tours with explanations of its history, beliefs and rituals that will enrich our visit. And, of course, you’ll have a chance to climb the mini-Mt. Fuji.

(Please note that although parts of this religious site are open to the public, it is considered sacred ground in Japan, and the Shinto priest will not be able to teach us about it in person when engaged in Shinto rites and observances. In such cases, our cycling leader will provide an explanation about the shrine instead.)

4. Tokyo Metropolitan Government Bldg. Observation Floor

The enormous Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building features a sky-high observation deck with a 360-degree view of the capital and its environs. The stunning panorama includes particularly good views of Tokyo Tower, Sky Tree, and on a clear day, even Mt. Fuji off in the distance.

5. Yoyogi Park

Located near Harajuku Station, Yoyogi Park is famous as a beautiful urban oasis. Having served as a prewar military parade ground, it is also the location where the first airplane in Japan took off on a 3-kilometer flight. After World War II, it was made part of Washington Heights, a housing complex for occupying Allied forces. Later returned to Japan, it was part of the Olympic Village for the Games hosted by Japan in 1964. Today, it provides our tour with a lovely, tranquil cycling path in the heart of the city.
