There’s nothing like cycling while sampling local delicacies in season– priceless

Through this trip, I relearned just what a priceless luxury it is to be able to visit a different place by bicycle and enjoy the freshest seasonal local delicacies. With no other cyclists in sight, we had the bike path all to ourselves, and I felt so free and easy, enjoying fantastic scenery.

I watch my carbs, and I don’t eat a lot of rice. But on this tour, I figured (rationalized?) that I could ride hard, and then eat that much more tasty, local, freshly harvested koshihikari rice! I also got to sample real local boiled chrysanthemum, particular kinds of local mushrooms, and other local gourmet delicacies that you just can’t experience in Tokyo.

On the second day, I took a little side trip to see Mitsuishi Shrine in Tadami, Fukushima prefecture. I made a votive offering according to the local custom of tying a ¥5 coin into a small hole in a giant stone above the shrine. I sure hope my wish comes true …
