Tour Details

This tour passes north from Kyoto to scenic Lake Biwa, and on to Kanazawa. We will see the uncanny Tojinbo Cliff natural rock formations and Hikone Castle, a designated National Treasure. Enjoy a stroll in the hot spring spa town of Yamashiro, and stay at a traditional Japanese onsen natural hot spring spa. The tour finishes in the old resort town of Kanazawa, which, like Kyoto, offers many Edo-period architectural highlights to enjoy.

Traveling Alone

A limited number of single-occupancy rooms are available for an additional charge on most tours. If you are a single traveler, please ask about room availability. A single-occupancy supplemental charge will be applied.

A note about ryokan, traditional-style Japanese inns

To make your experience of Japan more authentic and memorable, we schedule some tour accommodations in traditional ryokan inns. Rather than single rooms, ryokan accommodate two to five people per room, with traditional tatami mat flooring and futon bedding. Please note that at Planet Adventure, we arrange for our guests to be accommodated in rooms divided by gender.

  • Interested participants can join in washi traditional Japanese paper-making, as well as decorating with gold leaf and other materials.
  • Overnight stay and baths at Yamashiro, a traditional onsen hot spring spa and inn.
  • Can join a 3-day Noto Peninsula cycling tour with Japan locals, dated Oct. 10 to 12th after the tour.
  • Stay a ryokan, which is chosen as one of the 100 best hotels in Japan by tourism professionals for our service and facilities.
  • Kimono experience (Wearing and excursion in Kimono) in Kanazawa (optional tour)
  • Easy access to Kyoto (2 hours 20 minutes) and Tokyo (3 hours) from Kanazawa where the tour ends.

Itinerary

Day 1Kyoto

Meet at a Hotel in Kyoto at 17:00.

After check-in at a hotel, we’ll have a riders meeting to explain traffic rules in Japan and our schedule and route of the tour followed by welcome dinner.

If you would like to stay at Kyoto on the previous day of the tour, we”ll help you book a hotel room.

Day 2Kyoto ~ Hikone 71 km/44 mile

For a starter, we have a leisurely ride along the Lake Biwa, relatively long but very flat.

After breakfast, we take a train to Ohtsu city in Shiga prefecture. We pass “Seta-no-Karahashi”, then cycle to lakeshore. It is a comfortable ride with many places to see.

Arriving at Hikone, we visit Hikone Castle, a designated National Treasure.

Day 3Hikone ~ Tsuruga 65 km/40 mile

We keep on flat and comfortable local road. Enjoy beautiful scenery of country side in Japan.

Our goal today is “Kehi-no-Matsubara”, one of the three most scenic pine groves in Japan.

We also visit “Shibata-ke “, a famous old house built in Edo-Period, a house built in the traditional Japanese style of architecture called “Shoin-Zukuri”, origin of houses in Japan, if we have time.

We call at Sakana-machi, the largest seafood market on the Japan Sea coast, where we may have lunch.

Then, we take a train for Fukui city.

Day 4Fukui ~ Yamashiro Onsen 60 km/37 mile

We go up north along Kiziryu-River towards Tojinbo, a series of basaltic cliffs on the Sea of Japan. Tojinbo is named after Buddhism priest who was pushed off these cliffs. According to the legend, Tojinbo’s unquiet ghost appears around April 5th, the date he was murdered, and cause strong winds and rain.

We may have time to visit Yunokuni-no-Mori to experience some of the Japanese culture, such as silk painting, pottery, etc.

We stay at Yunokuni Tensho, which is chosen as one of the 100 best hotels in Japan by tourism professionals for our service and facilities.

Day 5Yamashiro onsen - Kanazawa 50 km/31 mile

Last day of cycling. We head for Kanazawa town.

First, we visit Yamanaka onsen, where we have a tea time at the Kakusenkei Kawadoko and then another hot spring erae, Awazu onsenm, old onsen, which was opened some 1,300 years ago.

We arrive at Kanazawa in the afternoon. After checking in a hotel, we have time to stroll around the area.

We have a dinner party tonight.

Day 6Kanazawa(no ride)

Tours end after breakfast.
