Tour Details

This cycling tour begins at Shinjuku station followed by a train trip to Matsumoto. We will have a riders’ meeting there. The second day is full of challenge. We will climb to Mt. Norikura (2,704m/8,871ft.). As you climb up, you will notice deep green forest gradually changes to autumn-colored alpine plants. You will also enjoy 360° breathtaking view of Japan Alps Mountains. Once you are done with the hard hill climbing, it’s time to go downhill to Hirayu hot spa! Relax and recover your body. On the following day, we will travel to Takayama historic town where very old Japanese town is preserved. On the final day of the cycling tour, we will ride from mountainous Takayama to Toyama which faces the Japan Sea.

A limited number of single-occupancy rooms are available for an additional charge on most tours. If you are a single traveler, please ask about room availability. A single-occupancy supplemental charge will be applied.

About Ryokan

To make your experience of Japan more authentic and memorable, we schedule some tour accommodations in traditional ryokan inns. Rather than single rooms, ryokan accommodate two to five people per room, with traditional tatami mat flooring and futon bedding. Please note that at Planet Adventure, we arrange for our guests to be accommodated in rooms divided by gender.

Day 1Matsumoto, Nagano Pref.

Meet at Matsumoto Station.

After check-in at a hotel in Matsumoto, we’ll visit the Matsumoto Castle, the oldest castle donjon remaining in Japan. After strolling the city, we have a riders meeting at the hotel to explain traffic rules in Japan, schedule, and route of the tour followed by welcome dinner.

Day 2Mt. Norikura Climb (Matsumoto, Nagano pref.) - Hirayu hot spa (Takayama, Gifu pref.)

We start cycling from Norikura Visitor Center at 1,500m/4,920 ft. elevation to the peak (2,704m/8,871ft.). You’ll notice the surrounding green is gradually changing to autumn-colored alpine plants. You’ll also enjoy a panoramic view of Japan Alps. After you reached the highest road in Japan, go downhill to Hirayu hot spa for your body refreshment.

Day 3Walking tour in Takayama, Gifu pref. (No cycling)

We will take a bus trip to Takayama and free action there. Takayama’s old townscape is one of must-sees in Japan. It also offers variety of foods. Hida Beef Burger is very popular among foreign visitors. Traditional Japanese food is not a bad choice, but you might find your favorite in ramens. We’ll take a train from Takayama to Hida Furukawa, another old town and get ready for the next day’s ride.

Day 4Hida Takayama, Toyama pref.

After the rest day, we will continue cycling along Continue cycling along mountain route down to Japan Sea. Toyama is known for its fresh seafood and beautiful scenery of Tateyama mountain ranges.

Day 5Toyama

This tour ends after breakfast.
